The Mallasajjan Vyayama Mattu Arogya Shikshna Samsthe of Dharwad is the leading and the most progressive institution of its kind in the field of Education, Physical Education, Fitness & Well-being in Karnataka.

The Vyayam Shala considers “HUMAN WEALTH” as the most precious resource of the country. The health, strength, stamina and the spirit of the youth are the very life thread of a nation. With the aim of making the youth of the country physically efficient and fit, disciplined and dutiful. The Vyayam Shala was founded in 1928 on the auspicious day of the salvation of Shri Vidyaranya, the founder saint of the Vijayanagara Empire. The Samsthe is named after the great hero “Mallasajjana”, who was instrumental in successful establishment of the ‘Vijayanagara Empire”.

Mallasajjan Vyayama Shala

TheVyayamaShala has been the oldest of all the constituent institutions and was started in the year 1928. It was enlarged into a TRUST after the Physical Education College came into existence. Youths trained in the Shala, the first of its kind in the North Karnataka Area, have rendered yeoman service inFreedom Movements, the Unification movements of Karnatak and to society at large. Their number runs into thousands and is spread throughout the country.

The VyayamShala is open for the general public in the mornings (6:00AM to 9:00 AM) and in the evening (5:00AM to 9:00 PM) every day except onSundays. Attending youth are taught exercise for the improvement of their health and fitness. Special coaching and guidance are offered to youths desirous of development of their physique both for fitness as for competitive sports. Nearly 5,000 youth have taken advantage of training in Weighting Lifting and Best Physique. About a hundred youths attend this section every day.

Youths desirous of becoming experts in some of the recognized indoor sports like Gymnastics are specially coached by experienced coaches. There is regular coaching in competitive gymnastics for children and youth, who take part at the state and nation gymnastics championship. About 30-35 children regularly participate in this programme.

Mallasajjan Pre-Primary and Primary School

Nursery and Kinder-Garten was initiated in the year-2000-01.Montessori and NTC trained teachers teach the children. About 45-50 children are admitted to these classes every year. Modern equipments are provided to these children.

A Primary school was necessary to feed to the English medium High School that was started earlier in 1997-98. Therefore a Kannada Medium Lower Primary School in 2001-02 and a English Medium Higher Primary Schools in 2004-05 were started. The school believes in the development of mind, morals values body and sprit.

Because of ‘Globalization’, there was a heavy demand for education in EnglishMedium, Secondary School was started in 1997-98. Thus, the Samsthe expanded its horizon of educational services. The high school has two sections each of 8th 9th and 10th standards with only 50 children in each class. The school believes in small but quality education.

Health of Community through Stress Reduction

Modern day life-style has resulted in increased stress, which has led to such hypokinetic diseases as blood pressure, diabetes, coronary artery diseases, paralytic strokes, low-back pains, osteoporosis, depression etc, Both Indian and the western societies have turned to the system of ‘Yoga’, the Indian traditional and cultural heritage, for their prevention and cure. Under such circumstances, it was necessary to aptly respond to such social need for a centre for management of stress through the practice of’Yoga’. ShriBalachandraJadhav, a patron of the Samsthe and a philanthropist gave wings to the dream. As a result the ‘Centre for Yoga and Stress Management’ was established in memory of his grandfather, ShriGanapathraoKhanderaoJadhavin Sept-2006.

The Centre is open to public. In such a short span of time more than 100men, women and children have benefited from the centre.

Progress During The Last Eight Decades.

  • 1928 to 1938:
    • Organised Training Camps at Jammihal, Gurwayunkere, Kandbargi, Bagalkot, Kottur, Harapanhalli, Sondur, Hospet, Bellary, Advani etc.
    • Rendered volunteer services during ‘Nadahabba’ festival at Hampi, meetings of National leaders during the freedom movement and National Flag hoisting Ceremonies and the centenary celebrations at Hampi.
    • Participated actively in the All Karnataka Physical Culture Conferences Bagalkot, Hampi, Chikkodi.
  • 1938 to 1948:
    • Getting an independent site and construction of the Vyayam shala building.
    • Organizing Summer Physical Training camps and assisting the Government in conducting such camps for the Primary Teachers.
    • Taking initiative in the publication of Literature on sports and physical education in KANNADA.
    • Organizing Region-wise Competitions and Tournaments in KABADDI, WEIGHT LIFTING, GYMNASTICS AND BEST PHYSIQUE.
  • 1948 to 1958:
    • Director’s quarters was built.
    • The Director started living on the campus since 1948.
    • Organizing the SILVER JUBILEE CELERATIONS under the presidentship of Dr. K.V.Iyer in 1954.
    • Organisation of the BOMBAY STATE PHYSICAL EDUCATON AND RECREATION CONFERENCE (3rd) in 1955.
    • Starting of the College of PHYSICAL EDUCATION for C.P.Ed.in 1956.
  • 1958 to 1968:
    • The visit of the Central Advisory Council for Physical Education & Recreaion-1959.
    • Building of the Physiotherapy Hall-1960.
    • The GYMNASIUM HALL-1967. THE OFFICE BLOCK and the Ground floor of theHostel Building 1967.
    • Levelling the Ground.
    • Publication of Physical Education in Kannada started.
  • 1968 to 1978:
    • Building the First Floor of the Office Block 1971.
    • Teachers’ Living Rooms and Store room 1970.
    • Improvements of the surface of the play ground-1974.
    • Addition of sports equipment.
    • Balakunja’ a pre-primary school started.
    • Regional coaching centre was started in 1969.
  • 1978 to 1988:
    • Construction of pavilion on the eastern part of the ground.
    • Organization of Karnatak University Inter-Collegiate Athletic Meet.
  • 1988 to 1998:
    • Construction of three-storied New Boys Hostel completed in 1996.
    • English Medium High School was started.
  • 1998 to 2008:
    • Sports medicine laboratory, measuring 50’X40’ was constructed under local area development fund of Member of Parliament in the place of original Vyayama Shala building.
    • Subsequently Library and Yoga and Stress Management Centre measuring 60’ X 40’ each were constructed.
    • Kannada medium lower primary and English medium Pre-primary and Higher Primary Schools were started.
    • Shri K.G.Jadhav Centre for Yoga Stress management was started.
    • Commencement of New Vyayama Shala Building construction under Legislator’s Local Area Development.
  • 2009 to 2018:
    • Inauguration of Primary School building.
    • Inauguration of Primary School first floor building.
    • End of the Second floor Primary School building and C.P.Ed course was closed.
    • Celebration of Shri. K.G. Nadgir centenary and University of his statue.
    • Inauguration of Computer Lab.
    • 67th Karnataka University, Dharwad, Inter Collegiate Athletic Meet.
